Faith47: “The Restless Debt of Third World Beauty”

Filed under: Film. — kendrick daye @ 4:51 am

South African street artist Faith47 just released a video, directed by Rowan Pybus, supported by The British Council, Red Bull, and Bass Festival. The short film serves as an exploration into some of the South Africa’s environment within the context of the painting Faith47 has been doing. Although it’s short the film is poignant and inspiring. Album Review: “Feed The Animals” by Girl Talk

Filed under: Music. — kendrick daye @ 4:43 am

Girl Talk’s fourth album, “Feed the Animals” is near immaculate. Those familiar with Girl Talk will come to the album expecting the wide variety of samples, but for this disc it seems producer Greg Gillis used samples from seemingly everybody, expected and unexpected—M.I.A., Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, The Police, The Cure, Britney and Madonna, Rihanna and Queen—they’re all fare game. He even takes some of their most obscure tracks and mixes them in the party.

The highlight of the album is undoubtedly “Here’s The Thing” which at 1:05 features an amazing breakbeat remix of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone.” In the track he manages to mix in Mary J. Blige, Peter Bjorn and John, Shawty Lo, Elvis Costello, Nelly Furtado, NIN, & MC Hammer and still have an great track.

What I found so intriguing about the album is in the our iTunes three and a half minute single loving culture “Feed The Animals” exists as a rare ode to the dwindling form of creating an album. This is Girl Talk everybody can enjoy.

grny_banner-mossyglossy.gif

This saturday, Giant Robot will present Mossy & Glossy, a group show featuring new works by artists from the Pacific Northwest with excellent nicknames: Justin “Scrappers” Morrison, Candi “Snaggs” Hibert, and Mike “Le Merde” Kelly.

According to a press release, “The art of Scrappers reflects the outdoorsy environment of Portland, OR and his new pieces will preview his upcoming book about a logging crew, feral scouts, beards, and mushrooms. Seattle-based Snaggs was inspired by stuffed Nauga Monsters from the ’60s to become a felt artist. Her rainbow-colored body of work, which includes “paintings,” dolls, and pillows, has a retro modern style that combines the handmade quality of craft with the sensibility of clean design. Le Merde has gained a rabid following in the limited-edition figure scene with his molten and oozing but cute style.”

A reception for Scrappers, Snaggs, and Le Merde will be held from 6:30 to 10:00 on Saturday, June 21.

Artwork will be available to view and purchase online next week.

Album Review: “Seeing Sounds”

Filed under: Music. — kendrick daye @ 9:03 pm

The Opening cut “Time for some action” has a minute long movie-like narration by Pharell sounding like he’s going to make some profound statement, before turning into a funky club banger, in which he assures “This is not love/it’s lust”. At least he is honest!

And with that, Pharell, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley, better known as N*E*R*D return with their third album. Unlike it’s mostly Rocky predecessor “Fly or die”, this is a mish mash of styles; Funk, Dance, and Rock, sometimes interlacing all in one song.

Similar to the opening cut is the bouncy “Everyone nose…”. “Windows” sounds like “Around the world in a day” era Prince, a clap-filled pop/rock song with Pharell even throwing in some Prince-style squeals. “Anti matter” has a buzzing riff with rapped verses and drum & bass in parts, followed by the similar “Spaz”.

“Yeah you” is one of my favourites, groovy R&B, as is the Chic-sounding “You know what” complete with scratchy guitars and remniscent of the song “She’s not me” Pharell did on Madonna’s new CD. Both will definately get a club jumping.

“Happy” is a sunny rocker which wouldn’t sound out of place on “Fly or die”, “kill joy” (with a rap about Little red riding hood and Prince-like harmonies) is a Funk laced upbeat song with a James Brown feel, while closing cut “Laugh about it” pairs chunky beats with driving guitars.

Slowing things down are the piano ballad “Sooner or later” with lovely harmonies (remember “Maybe” from “Fly or die”?), and “Love bomb” (piano and guitars, eerie flourishes and chunky beats in the chorus).

So there you have it, their most musically adventurous album yet. A fun album with a little something for everyone.

“ALL TOGETHER NOW”

Filed under: Art & Design., Scene Kids — kendrick daye @ 6:07 pm

There’s strength in numbers and nothing brings people together more than art. When the media wants us to choose sides over polarizing presidential candidates and divisive issues it’s always a good song, art piece or book that brings us together.

On Friday, June 27th, Art Nouveau Magazine presents “All Together Now” an exhibition featuring the work of Corinne Francilus, Myra Nash, Shawn Blake, Olivia Dong and Paul Deforrest. The work in this show will take your mind off all that divides us and focus on something that brings us together—the human experience. So let us grow together and enjoy together. Pieces will be available for purchase during the event.

Art Nouveau Magazine presents “All Together Now” will open June 27th from 7 pm – 10 pm at Tilt Coffee Shop in Castleberry Hill during the famous Art Stroll. “All Together Now” will be on display until July 24th.

Asuza Fall/Winter 08 Collection

Filed under: Fashion. — kendrick daye @ 3:16 pm

Australian fashion label Asuza have just released photos from their Fall/Winter ‘08 line. The line is dark feature mostly black, white, gray and a tinge of white. But what it lacks in color it makes up for in fit and cut. The denim skinnies are a winner. My favorite are the acid washed denim with the black cuff at the bottom. You know the drill, click more for more photos.

Complex Geometries Spring/Summer 2008 Line

Filed under: Fashion. — kendrick daye @ 3:11 pm

I never liked geometry in school. But this isn’t school and this isn’t that type of geometry, it’s alot more complex–in a good way. Montreal based fashion label Complex Geometries by designer Clayton Evans released their Spring/Summer 2008 line which looks amazing. The cuts, the colors, the fits are all unique and seem like a perfect mesh between streetwear and high fashion. Click more for more photos.
